Aug 28 - Blessed…
With the beatitudes, Jesus calls us to a different way of understanding this life, one that is “blessed/happy” because it means living life God’s way. However, with the beatitudes, Jesus also makes it clear that God’s way is often very different than we expect.
Sep 04 - Are the Poor in Spirit
Matthew 5:3 & Luke 18:9-14
Jesus says that blessedness/happiness is found in spiritual humility rather than pride. Only in humility can we see our true need for God.
Sep 11 - Are those who Mourn
Matthew 5:4, 2 Corinthians 1:3-7 & 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
Jesus says that rather than being filled with despair, those who mourn will be blessed/happy because by faith God meets us in our mourning with comfort and assurance.
Sep 18 - Are the Meek
Matthew 5:5 , 18:1-5, 19:13-15 & 11:25-29
Jesus says that blessedness/happiness is found in meekness/gentleness rather than in aggressively seeking to assert our will and get our way. Meekness is the way of Jesus and those who chose this way will inherit the earth (the kingdom).
Sep 25 - Are Those Who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
Matthew 5:6, Proverbs 15:9, 2 Timothy 3:16 & Romans 3:10, 21-26
Jesus says that blessedness/happiness comes from seeking righteousness rather than the ways of the world and that those who do so will be filled. However, we must remember that we are to seek righteousness knowing that we will never be righteous apart from Jesus.
Oct 02 - Are the Merciful
Matthew 5:7 & 18:21-35
Jesus says that those who are merciful are blessed/happy because they will be shown mercy by God.
Oct 09 - Are the Pure in Heart
Oct 16 - Are the Peacemakers
Matthew 5:9, 43-48 & 2 Corinthians 5:16-21
Jesus says that those who are peacemakers are blessed/happy and that they will be recognized as God’s Children. We are called to make peace (or reconciliation) between people, and between people and God.
Oct 23 - Are Those Who are Persecuted
Matthew 5:10-12 & 1 Peter 4:12-19
Jesus says that blessedness/happiness is for those who are persecuted for living God’s way because they will inherit God’s kingdom and be rewarded by Him for the faith it takes to endure such things.
